Hotel Rancho El Tesoro Description
The decoration of the ranch’s façade, with battlements and red paint, resembles a castle. This building was built in the 1950s and sits in a lush natural setting in a peaceful area of the Las Casas River neighborhood. The site was chosen by an American to build his vacation home. The rooms, designed for family and guests, now welcome international tourists.
The accommodation is very popular with fishermen, and is, undoubtedly, a good choice for visitors on their way to the International Diving Center El Colony, in the west of the island. From Treasure Ranch you can explore other places like Playa Bibijagua, to the northeast, known for its black sands.
The Isle of Youth has a rich history. For several centuries it was visited by pirates such as Francis Drake and, according to some historians, it was inspiration for the Scottish novelist Robert L. Stevenson who wrote the celebrated Treasure Island.
The Isle of Youth was also the place where National Hero José Martí was sent when he was young to recover his health after leaving prison in Havana. The farm where he recuperated, El Abra, is now a museum. It was also to the Isle of Youth that the attackers of the Moncada barracks in 1953 were sent. They were imprisoned in the Presidio Modelo, now a museum, and national monument.
